Learning to Drive: How Long Does It Take?

The roads today are busier than ever, so it’s important not to base your expectations on how many lessons your parents or grandparents needed to pass their driving test!

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the average learner takes around 45 hours of professional lessons, supplemented by 22 hours of private practice, to reach test standard.  That’s a total of approximately 67 hours of driving experience.  However, those who complete 100 hours or more of combined lessons and practice tend to be much safer drivers after passing their test.

The time required varies for each learner, depending on factors such as learning speed, prior experience, and how often you practice outside of lessons. The key to success is consistent practice and working with an experienced instructor to focus on areas that need improvement.
