Frequently Asked Questions
At the moment we only offer MANUAL lessons.
This is a deliberate decision. If you take and pass your practical driving test in a manual car, you are legally entitled to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles only.
Some learners choose automatic because it removes clutch control and gear changes, which can make early lessons feel simpler. That is completely understandable.
However, learning in a manual often gives drivers broader vehicle control experience and a deeper understanding of how a car works. Many learners feel more confident overall once they have mastered clutch control, moving off smoothly, and gear selection.
There is also a practical consideration. If you travel abroad or hire a vehicle in certain countries, manual cars are still very common. Holding an unrestricted licence can give you more flexibility in those situations.
At DTMK Driving School, we believe in equipping drivers with the widest possible skills and options from day one. For us, that means training in a manual vehicle and helping you gain a licence without restriction.
If you already hold an automatic licence and would like to upgrade to manual, please get in touch.
Your first lesson is designed to help you feel comfortable and understand the basics without pressure.
We will begin by checking your provisional driving licence and discussing any previous experience you may have had. You will then be shown how to adjust your seat, steering position and mirrors correctly, and we will explain the main vehicle controls clearly.
Depending on your confidence level, we will usually begin in a quiet area where you can learn how to move off safely, control the clutch smoothly and bring the car to a controlled stop. There is no expectation to be perfect. The aim is to build understanding and confidence step by step.
You will not be taken onto busy roads before you are ready.
By the end of the lesson, you should have a clear idea of how the car works and what we will focus on next.
We generally recommend at least one lesson per week to maintain steady progress.
Some learners choose to train twice per week, which can accelerate development and help skills become consistent more quickly. Long gaps between lessons can slow progress, particularly in the early stages when new skills are still being embedded.
Regular private practice between professional lessons can also make a significant difference. The more quality time you spend behind the wheel, the more confident and capable you are likely to become.
Consistency is usually more effective than intensity.
Everyone is different. Your starting confidence, coordination, ability to practise between lessons, and how regularly you train will all make a difference.
The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency, which sets and oversees the UK driving test, advises that the average learner needs around 45 hours of professional instruction with an Approved Driving Instructor, plus approximately 22 hours of private practice.
Some learners take fewer hours. Some take more. The key is not the number of hours, but reaching a consistent test standard where you can drive safely and independently without prompts.
At DTMK Driving School we focus on building real understanding, not just getting you through a test. When you are ready, you will know you are ready.
Learners who complete regular private practice alongside professional lessons often progress more quickly and feel more confident at test standard.
We do not offer traditional crash courses where large numbers of hours are completed over a very short period of time without prior experience.
We believe that learning to drive safely and confidently takes time to develop. Most learners benefit from structured, consistent training rather than trying to compress everything into a single week.
However, if you already have previous driving experience and are close to test standard, we can discuss a short term structured programme to prepare you for your test.
Our focus is not on rushing you through a test. It is on helping you become a safe, capable and confident driver for life.
You may use your own vehicle for private practice. If you would like to use your own car for professional lessons or for the practical driving test, we will first need to assess its suitability.
Before using your vehicle for instruction, we would normally want to see you drive in our dual controlled car to ensure you are at an appropriate stage of learning.
We must also check that your vehicle:
• Is roadworthy and correctly maintained
• Is insured for driving tuition and driving test use
• Meets DVSA requirements for test vehicles
Using our dual controlled training vehicle is often the safest and most practical option, particularly in the earlier stages of learning.
If you are considering using your own car, please speak to us in advance so we can guide you through what is required.
We regularly prepare learners for tests at:
• Bletchley Driving Test Centre
• Leighton Buzzard Driving Test Centre
• Northampton Driving Test Centre
These are the centres we know best, including common routes, local junctions, roundabout layouts and typical independent driving areas.
We have also previously covered tests at:
• Aylesbury Driving Test Centre
• Bedford Driving Test Centre
If you have booked a test at a different centre, please speak to us and we will advise whether we can support you there.
Yes. All DTMK Driving School vehicles are fitted with dual control pedals.
This means the instructor has access to a brake and clutch on their side of the car. They are there as a safety feature and are very rarely needed, but they provide reassurance while you are learning.
In some situations they may also be used briefly for demonstration, for example when showing clutch control or slow manoeuvres.
Their purpose is simple. To keep you safe while you build confidence and skill behind the wheel.
We use a professionally installed BlackVue DR750X three channel dash camera system in our training vehicles.
This model records high definition footage from the front of the vehicle, the rear of the vehicle, and the interior. The system is in place to protect both learner and instructor. It provides transparency, accountability and, if needed, the opportunity to review specific events constructively as part of the learning process.
All footage is handled securely and in accordance with our published Privacy Policy.(https://www.dtmk.co.uk/privacy-policy) Recordings are not used for surveillance or unnecessary monitoring. They are retained and managed strictly in line with data protection requirements.
During a practical driving test, the system is adjusted to comply with guidance from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Audio recording is disabled and no interior footage of the driving examiner is captured. Examiners wear their own body worn cameras during tests.
The camera system is there for safety and professionalism. Nothing more.
All DTMK Driving School vehicles are modern, leased vehicles maintained under a comprehensive service agreement. Most are also covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
In the unlikely event of a breakdown, our lease provider arranges recovery and supplies a suitable dual controlled courtesy vehicle so that lessons can continue with minimal disruption. Replacement vehicles are typically provided as quickly as possible, often within 24 to 48 hours depending on availability.
We also take additional precautions. Each vehicle carries a full size spare wheel, which is increasingly uncommon in modern cars. This means that in the event of a simple puncture, we can usually resolve the issue at the roadside and continue the day’s lessons safely.
Our aim is simple. Reliable vehicles and continuity for our learners.
Safety is always the priority.
The decision depends on both the severity of the conditions and your stage of learning.
If you are at the very beginning of your training, driving in snow or ice may be overwhelming and would not help you achieve the objectives of that lesson. In those cases, we may reschedule.
For more experienced learners, carefully managed driving in challenging conditions can actually be valuable. Learning how to assess grip, braking distances and visibility while supported by an experienced instructor can build real confidence and skill.
In all cases, a decision will only be made after the instructor has assessed conditions locally. If the weather is severe or the roads are unsafe, the lesson will be rearranged without penalty.
Your safety and the safety of other road users will always come first.
We completely understand that illness and unexpected situations can happen. If you are unwell, please do not attend your lesson. It is important that we protect the health of other learners and instructors.
To cancel or rearrange a lesson, we require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice. This allows us to offer that appointment time to another learner.
Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged in full, in line with our Terms and Conditions.(https://www.dtmk.co.uk/terms-and-conditions)
If you think you may be coming down with something, please let us know as early as possible. Early communication gives us the best chance of helping you avoid losing the lesson fee.
If we ever need to cancel due to instructor illness, severe weather, or vehicle issues, your lesson will be rearranged or refunded.
We aim to be fair, consistent, and understanding while also protecting the sustainability of the business.
Under UK law, the driver of a vehicle is legally responsible for any traffic or enforcement offences committed while driving. This includes matters such as speeding, bus lane contraventions, yellow box junction offences or parking violations.
As the learner driver, you are considered the driver of the vehicle during your lesson. If a notice is issued, the registered keeper of the vehicle will initially receive correspondence and will be legally required to identify the person driving at the time of the incident.
Once identified, responsibility for the offence rests with the driver.
Your instructor will always guide you to drive safely and lawfully, but ultimate responsibility for compliance with traffic law remains with the person driving the vehicle.
We do not accept cash payments.
All lessons must be paid for in advance, either by card through the Total Drive app or by bank transfer. Payment should be received no later than the evening before your scheduled lesson.
Receipts are generated automatically and sent to your registered email address, so please ensure your contact details are kept up to date.
Operating on a cashless basis ensures accurate record keeping, transparency and security for both learners and the business.
