Become a Driving Instructor

with DTMK Driving School

If you are looking for a rewarding career with flexibility, independence, and the opportunity to make a real difference, becoming a driving instructor could be the perfect next step.

At DTMK Driving School, we provide professional driving instructor training, mentoring, and business support to help you qualify and build a successful and sustainable career. You will receive structured guidance, real world experience, and ongoing support throughout your journey.

Whether you are changing career, seeking greater independence, or looking for a new professional challenge, we will help you understand the process and support you every step of the way.

The Path to Qualification: Step by Step Support

To become a fully qualified driving instructor, you must complete the DVSA’s three part qualification process.

These are official tests conducted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA):

Part 1 – Theory Test
Part 2 – Driving Ability Test
Part 3 – Instructional Ability Test

We provide structured support, training, and mentoring to help you prepare for each stage. You can progress at a pace that suits your personal and professional commitments.

Most candidates choose to apply for a trainee licence, often called the pink badge, which allows you to begin teaching real learners and earning income while completing your final stage of training.

We will help you understand each stage and plan your training in a realistic and manageable way.

Professional Instructor Training and Mentoring

Instructor training and mentoring is delivered by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor and Qualified Teacher with extensive experience in driver education, assessment, and professional development.

Where appropriate, additional specialist preparation may also be delivered in partnership with experienced ORDIT registered trainer colleagues. This ensures candidates receive comprehensive preparation for all parts of the ADI qualification process.

This combined approach provides both structured instructor training and real world mentoring within a professional driving school environment.

Training is delivered in a professional, supportive manner, focused on helping you develop safe, effective teaching skills and strong professional standards.

What Training Is Required?

After passing the Part 2 Driving Ability Test, the DVSA requires a minimum of 60 hours of instructional training before qualification.

This is split into:

  • 40 hours of training before applying for a trainee licence

  • 20 additional hours of training during the trainee licence period

We structure this training in a clear and manageable way, allowing you to build skills progressively while preparing for real teaching situations.

Part 3: Instructional Ability Training

The Part 3 test assesses your ability to teach safe and effective driving lessons.

Most candidates apply for a trainee licence before taking this test, allowing them to gain valuable real world teaching experience.

The DVSA requires:

  • 40 hours of instructional training before applying for a trainee licence

  • 20 additional hours of training during the trainee licence period

We deliver this in structured stages:

  • 20 hour block (Stage 1): £1,200.00 (Covers teaching techniques, lesson planning, risk management, and communication).

  • 20 hour block (Stage 2): £1,200.00 (Focuses on lesson delivery, real pupil scenarios, and preparation for the Part 3 test).

This training is spread across your working period, allowing you to build experience while earning.

Start Earning as a PDI with DTMK

Once you have passed Part 2 and completed the required training, you can apply for a trainee licence and begin working as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI).

This allows you to:

  • Earn income while completing your qualification

  • Gain real world teaching experience

  • Develop confidence and professional skills

  • Receive ongoing mentoring and support

This stage is an important step in developing your experience and preparing for qualification.

The Part 3 Test

The Part 3 test is your final assessment. You will deliver a real driving lesson while a DVSA examiner observes and assesses your teaching ability.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

  • Plan and structure lessons

  • Manage risk effectively

  • Support pupil learning

  • Communicate clearly and professionally

We provide preparation, feedback, and mentoring to help you approach this test with confidence.

Becoming a Fully Qualified ADI

Once you pass Part 3, you can register as an Approved Driving Instructor and begin working independently or as part of a professional driving school.
