Driving Test Swaps Explained (May 5th 2026 Update)

What learners in Milton Keynes need to know

If you are trying to bring your driving test forward, you may have heard about swapping test slots with another learner.

This is still possible, but the rules have changed significantly in 2026. Most importantly, driving instructors are no longer allowed to make swaps for you.

If you want to swap your driving test, it must be arranged directly between learners and completed through the DVSA process.

This guide explains exactly how it works, what the rules are, and what you need to be aware of before considering a swap.

What is a driving test swap?

A driving test swap is not the same as changing your test date.

You are not searching for a new slot. Instead, you are exchanging your existing booking with another learner who already has a test booked.

For example, if you have a test in September and another learner has one in July, you can agree to swap. Once completed, you take their July slot and they take your September slot.

It is a direct exchange, not a new booking.

Instructors can no longer make swaps

One of the biggest changes is that instructors and third parties are no longer allowed to make swaps on behalf of learners.

The DVSA is very clear on this. Swaps must be arranged directly between the two learners involved.

This means:

  • No websites making swaps for you

  • No instructors completing the process

  • No third party services doing it on your behalf

Everything must be done through the official DVSA process.

The key rules for swapping your test

To swap your driving test, all of the following conditions must be met:

You must both agree to the exact slot

Both learners must agree to the exact:

  • Date

  • Time

  • Test centre

There is no flexibility. It must be a like for like exchange.

It counts as one of your allowed changes

Each learner is only allowed 2 changes (as at 5th May 2026) to a driving test booking.

A swap uses one of those changes. If either learner has already used both changes, the swap will not be possible.

There is a strict time limit

You must request the swap “at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the 2 tests”.

If you are inside that window, the swap will not go through.

The test type must match

You can only swap with a learner who has the same type of booking as you.

This includes:

  • Weekday tests

  • Evening or weekend tests

  • Extended tests

  • Tests with additional time

If the booking types do not match, the swap cannot be completed.

New location restrictions from June 2026

From 9 June 2026, the DVSA has introduced stricter rules on where swaps can take place.

You can only swap with a learner whose test is booked at:

  • The same test centre

  • One of the three nearest test centres

  • The test centre you originally booked

This rule significantly limits long distance swaps and makes local knowledge far more important.

Which test centres can you swap with?

The DVSA has created a fixed system that links each test centre to three specific nearby centres. Swaps are only allowed within those groups, or back to your original booking.

For learners in and around Milton Keynes, this will often involve centres such as:

  • Bletchley

  • Northampton

  • Leighton Buzzard

  • Aylesbury

  • Bedford

However, the exact centres you can swap with are determined by the DVSA system and are not based purely on distance. The allowed centres are pre-defined and applied to your specific booking.

Because of this, not every combination of the centres listed above will necessarily be allowed for every learner.

How to swap your driving test

The DVSA process is quite strict and must be followed exactly.

Swaps can only be done by phone. They cannot be completed online, by email, or through social media.

Both learners must be available at the same time.

The process works like this:

  1. One learner calls the DVSA

  2. Security checks are completed

  3. The second learner is contacted

  4. Both learners confirm they agree to the swap

  5. The DVSA completes the exchange

If either learner does not answer the phone, fails the security checks, or does not agree, the swap will not go ahead.

Important safety advice

When arranging a swap, you will need to speak to another learner. It is important to understand what information is actually required, and what should never be shared.

What you may need to share with the other learner

The only detail typically needed between learners is:• Their driving test booking reference number

This allows the DVSA to identify the correct booking during the call. You do not need to share personal details with each other.

What you should never share

To protect your personal data, the DVSA advises that you must not share:

  • Your driving licence number

  • Your theory test pass certificate number

  • Your address

  • Your phone number

  • Your email address

  • Your payment card details

Safeguards built into the DVSA process

The DVSA has designed the process so that sensitive information is handled securely:

  • Both learners are contacted directly by the DVSA using the phone number already on their booking

  • You are not required to provide the other learner’s personal details, only their booking reference

  • Full payment card numbers and security codes are never requested

  • Both learners must pass security checks and confirm they agree before the swap is completed

  • If either learner cannot be verified or does not agree, the swap will not go ahead

These safeguards are in place to make sure your personal information stays protected throughout the process.

Real World Examples

A common situation is a learner who has booked a test several months away and is looking for something sooner.

They may find another learner who is not ready for their earlier test and wants to move it back. In this case, a swap can work well for both people.

Another example is learners who have booked tests at slightly different local centres and are trying to bring their test closer to home. With the new location rules, this is now more restricted, so it is important to check eligibility before making arrangements.

In both cases, the biggest risk is swapping into a test that you are not ready for. That often leads to a failed test, which can delay progress even further.

Why this matters for learners in Milton Keynes

Test availability in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas has been a challenge for some time.

Centres such as Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, and Northampton often have long waiting times, which is why learners look for alternative options like swapping.

The new DVSA rules are designed to reduce misuse of the system, but they also mean learners need to be more organised and realistic about their options.

Local knowledge now matters more than ever. Understanding how the DVSA rules apply to your area can save a lot of time and frustration.

Where instructors can still help

Although instructors cannot make swaps, we are still here to support you.

Many instructors are part of local networks and chat groups where learners are looking to swap test slots.

This means we may be able to:

  • Let you know if someone is looking for a similar test date

  • Point you towards relevant groups

  • Help you understand whether a swap is realistic

What we cannot do is complete the swap for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my driving instructor swap my test for me?

No. Instructors are not allowed to make or complete swaps on your behalf. This must be done directly between learners through the DVSA.

Does a swap count as changing my test?

Yes. A swap uses one of your allowed test changes.

Can I swap with anyone in the UK?

Not anymore. From June 2026, swaps are limited to the same test centre or nearby centres based on DVSA rules.

Can I swap my test online?

No. Swaps can only be completed by calling the DVSA, with both learners available at the same time.

The swap will not go ahead. Both learners must be available and confirm the swap during the call.

Summary

Driving test swaps are still possible, but the process is now much more controlled.

You must arrange everything directly with another learner, follow the DVSA rules carefully, and complete the swap by phone.

There are strict limits around timing, location, and booking type, and instructors are no longer allowed to make or complete swaps for you.

If you are considering a swap, the most important thing is to make sure you are genuinely ready for the earlier test date.
